Insanity or Cowardice?

Here is Jeffrey Sachs' latest offering: "Twice before in American history, powerful corporate interests dominated Washington and brought America to a state of unacceptable inequality, instability and corruption. Both times a social and political movement arose..a third progressive era is likely to be in the making." This economic visionary prescribes "a fresh generation of candidates."

Third Times a Charm? Really? Doing the same thing and expecting a different result? Looking beyond the inane revisionism and missing definition of acceptable "inequality", he reminds me of Tony Judt arguing for "social democracy" as Tony Blair and Berlusconi get elected. Even if we get a New New New Deal, won't Hillary just de-regulate the whole fucking thing again? Or that "fresh generation" of Twitter candidates?

Here is a different historical narrative from Wolfgang Streek in his NLR 71 article, Crisis of Democratic Capitalism.( he has obviously been reading my blog). He traces a long arc back to the post-war settlement between capital and labor where workers accepted capitalist markets and property rights in exchange for political democracy (social security, pensions, raises, full employment, collective bargaining, etc) But when the war bump ends and global growth slows in the late 60's, inflation begins to rise rapidly. "inflation can be described as a monetary reflection of distributional conflict between a working class, demanding both employment security and a higher share in their countries income, and a capitalist class striving to maximize the return on it's capital. As the two sides act on mutually incompatible ideas of what is theirs by right, one emphasizing the entitlements of citizenship and the other those of property and market power, inflation may also be considered an expression of anomie in a society.."

Along comes Volker and Carter and an attack on inflation by raising interest rates. The unemployment was handled by the Reagan/Thatcher assault on unions (so much for the "settlement") but stagnation and economic disorder persisted. All the deferred wages, in the form of social entitlements, came due however, and we begin the era of public debt, borrowing once more into future productivity. Of course,"just like inflation the accumulation of public debt cannot go on forever" so under Clinton we enter the era of de-regulation and end of "welfare as we know it." The government was able to run a budget surplus by "giving citizens and firms unprecedented opportunities for indebtedness" and so public debt was replaced by private debt. We know how that story ends. It's public again and being passed around like a hot potato.

The beauty of the capitalist system is you can put off till tomorrow what you don't wish to deal with today. Shift the burden, cook the books, or better yet, simply pass the debt off to the next generation. War debt, financial bubble debt, climate debt, it never has to show up in the actual price of anything...till later.

Powerful government interests erected Breton Woods to prevent future wars (ala WWI/2)... powerful government interests took us off the gold standard in '71 so as to pay for LBJ's "Great Society"... powerful government interests expanded the easy credit FANNIE/FREDDIE credit bubble that popped in '08, and powerful government interests created the new "Venture Socialist" green energy mafia we lovingly refer to as "Solyndra" and "Government Motors".

Corporate interests don't dominate Washington. Government interests dominate Wall Street.

Well trout, we've got real trouble now.
Herman looked pretty dumb when he was asked to critique our policy in Libya ("Let's see, is that the one next to Egypt or the one under France?).
We need a PR blitz for 9-9-9.

On another note, Beak is overjoyed that the personal property of OWS was just cleared out and taken to the dump. They were offending Officer Beak.

I think Menino is pretty close to giving the order in Boston. But it isn't over.

Farmer, come back with us to the thrilling days of Jay Gould,Henry Rogers, Andrew Carnegie and Cornelius Vanderbilt. Unfettered misery on a grand scale. We'll see if we can't get you a job in the mines with Pagan and Beak.

I am overjoyed and was amazed at the professionalism of the NYPD. They did a wonderful job but were to lenient they should have arrested more protesters.

The police were ready for a rumored anarchist reaction in Foley Square. The protesters took one look at the NYPD presence and left the area.

As for government (the People? The elite? Jews?) dominating Wall Street, interesting theory Speedy.

It's not my theory...

"The end of democracy will be when the electorate learns that it vote itself largess from the public coffers."

I suspect that it must have originated back in the day when the Parthenon served as a Treasury in Athens... separate from the treasuries at Delphi and Olympia. Plato mentioned the problem in his "Republic"... you know, the part of the government "drones" stealing all the "honey" from the oligarchs and transforming what a formerly a timocracy into a democracy.

At 10:51 AM, Blogger Thersites said...

Of course, it's even a bigger problem when the voters learn that they can vote themselves largess out of some other poor saps treasuries...

Leave it to the Greeks to prove that the people ARE capable of learning from history. ;)

At 11:15 AM, Blogger Thersites said...

...or at least the "drones" are so capable. ;)

Plato, "Republic"

Well, I said, I meant to refer to the class of idle spendthrifts, of whom the more courageous are the-leaders and the more timid the followers, the same whom we were comparing to drones, some stingless, and others having stings.

A very just comparison.

These two classes are the plagues of every city in which they are generated, being what phlegm and bile are to the body. And the good physician and lawgiver of the State ought, like the wise bee-master, to keep them at a distance and prevent, if possible, their ever coming in; and if they have anyhow found a way in, then he should have them and their cells cut out as speedily as possible.

Yes, by all means, he said.

Then, in order that we may see clearly what we are doing, let us imagine democracy to be divided, as indeed it is, into three classes; for in the first place freedom creates rather more drones in the democratic than there were in the oligarchical State.

That is true.

And in the democracy they are certainly more intensified.

How so?

Because in the oligarchical State they are disqualified and driven from office, and therefore they cannot train or gather strength; whereas in a democracy they are almost the entire ruling power, and while the keener sort speak and act, the rest keep buzzing about the bema and do not suffer a word to be said on the other side; hence in democracies almost everything is managed by the drones.

Very true, he said.

Then there is another class which is always being severed from the mass.

What is that?

They are the orderly class, which in a nation of traders sure to be the richest.

Naturally so.

They are the most squeezable persons and yield the largest amount of honey to the drones.

Why, he said, there is little to be squeezed out of people who have little.

And this is called the wealthy class, and the drones feed upon them.

That is pretty much the case, he said.

The people are a third class, consisting of those who work with their own hands; they are not politicians, and have not much to live upon. This, when assembled, is the largest and most powerful class in a democracy.

True, he said; but then the multitude is seldom willing to congregate unless they get a little honey.

And do they not share? I said. Do not their leaders deprive the rich of their estates and distribute them among the people; at the same time taking care to reserve the larger part for themselves?

Why, yes, he said, to that extent the people do share.

And the persons whose property is taken from them are compelled to defend themselves before the people as they best can?

What else can they do?

And then, although they may have no desire of change, the others charge them with plotting against the people and being friends of oligarchy? True.

And the end is that when they see the people, not of their own accord, but through ignorance, and because they are deceived by informers, seeking to do them wrong, then at last they are forced to become oligarchs in reality; they do not wish to be, but the sting of the drones torments them and breeds revolution in them.

That is exactly the truth.

Attorneys more educated and well compensated than you address me as Sir. The truth is that Communism is basically a power scam by useless types who are too lazy and ill suited to wield power.

How one acts when given power is a measure of the individual man. Communist, and their apologists, have proven they are a danger to mankind. Since they love communal living they should be indulged with trips to mental health facilities or jails and they can live out their dreams while the rest of us enjoy reality.

Thersites: Superior people don't want to take advantage but they are forced to do so. That's why it was called the Final Solution. They tried everything else but in the end they were forced to simply eliminate the drone leaders.I get it now.

When scrotum lickers like Michael Bloombery grow enough of a spine to put the hammer down on your ass, you know that can only mean one thing. The people have had it with you, and they have spoken.

Well, Pagan, I marched to the Charlestown bridge today. The intent was to focus on infrastructure problems and we hooked up with a couple other cities who did the same.

Police wouldn't let us on the bridge because we might "destabilize" it. Ironic, that.

Meanwhile, it goes on in NYC where Mayor Scrooge McDuck has a tiger by the tail.

It has been a chore keeping the pseudo anarchists who just want to jam with the cops under control but it is being done in those cities that aren't letting the cops loose.

Poor Beak, he hasn't been posting. Probably crying in his beer that Giuliani isn't there to roll out mechanized ordnance.

Well Pagan, we might not be disbanding any time soon.

BOSTON — Winter is quickly approaching, but protesters at the Occupy Boston encampment say they are staying put. In fact, they’ve won a temporary restraining order that makes it harder for the city to kick them out of Dewey Square. But a Massachusetts Institute of Technology architecture professor says the camp can’t make it through the winter as is, so he’s drafting a redesign of the site to protect the protesters and their tents from cold and snow.

Officer Strutter, the videos of the cops dragging a 120 lb. girl by her hair for no apparent reason aren't helping your cause.

Please tell Mayor Scrooge McDuck that when there are cameras around he should be careful how he employs the Imperial Star Troopers.

At 4:00 PM, Blogger The Pagan Temple said...

I wonder if that little chick that got dragged by the hair is the one that hit some cop in the face with a glass object. Or maybe threw some kind of unknown liquid in the faces of two or three of them.

One thing about people, Ducky, they do like to go to work to make money if for no other reason than to pay their rent, bills, and feed their families. And they don't appreciate a bunch of assholes blocking their way, and preventing their kids from going to school.

That attitude would probably account for about, oh, say the fifty-three percent of Americans that actually pay taxes? Just saying.

Now come back and tell me how these unenlightened capitalist tools need to be taken somewhere and re-educated, or they're eventually going to get what's coming to them.
