Virtual Conditioning
I remember not that long ago when I would visit an arcade there would be a little airgun on a chain and you would try to shoot little ducks or something for an insanely cheap and tacky "prize". Those innocent diversions have been replaced by video games such as Halo 3 ,Assassin's Creed or Eternal Forces, which adds an "evangelical thrill to the marriage of technology and annihilation". Now I personally have never touched a video game, not so much as a pac-man, but according to the recent review of two new "war" books by Andrew O'Hagan in the London Review of Books, "a quiet revolution appears to have taken place-quiet because of headphones ,pehaps-in the Jerry Springer generations attitude to death and violence".
It was easy to explain the poor, the minority, the immigrant soldier looking for citizenship or a way out of the inner city or hardscrabble farm but I always wondered about the white, middle class ones so eager to "fight evil" or perform a duty of civilization. "Tough young men up to their eyeballs in fantasy" (sound like anyone we know?) (Beak?) ,"They were a new breed of warrior...,Soldiers raised on hip hop, internet porn and video games, a disparate band of born-again Christians, dopers, Buddhists and New Agers who gleaned their precepts from kung-fu movies and Oprah Winfrey". I would add death metal music and put Buddhist in qoutation marks.
This is simply a sophisticated adaptation in the long running project to colonize the minds of the young but like everything , there is the issue of blowback. In the new game Manhunt 2, "players direct the progress of an asylum inmate inmate with a split personality. You can choose to 'be' either 'Danny' or 'Leo': Leo is a psychotic killer, an expert in 'combat', evasion, infiltration and assassination techniques."

As with the debate on the effects of television, I question the deeper impact of these games. That they lead to a coarsening and vulgarizing of taste, aesthetic and otherwise, is true. Why is THIS how people amuse themselves? Beyond that, I am unconvinced and not very concerned.
My son and his friends revel in Halo 3 - they are all very nice young boys. Maybe it makes sickos worse...
I think it will take more time to see how video games really do, or if they do, have any effect on kids.
I pretended to be a cowgirl shooting pretend indians when I was little. I out grew that little girl silliness a long long time ago. Today I don't shoot indians or anyone else and I detest guns. :)
As a fan of both metal and video games, I think you're a bit out of line.
They're both mostly harmless, unless you spend all your time immersed in them. Metal makes for great work out music, and video games provide a useful break from reading.
This is long but useful on this subject.
I think it goes well beyond "coarsening and vulgarizing" to an actual diminishing of intellectual and sensory capabilities.Children on average hear a narrower range of tones that those of fifty years ago, have shorter attention spans.I watched the Superbowl with a bunch of folks who thought the advertising was "entertainment" but who will go out and buy everything they were instructed to.
Games and lyrics are very subtle forms of coercion but if .as patricia says, it will "take more time", we would do well to operate on the precautionary principle.
Now I personally have never touched a video game…
With this as your lead-in caveat it is easy to see how you can espouse someone else's opinion as authority sufficient to justify your own, from-the-outside, skew of the effect of computer games on other people as an evil to be avoided, just as you have for protection of your so easily corrupted morals.
Does your take on this subject remind you of anything you bitch about all the time, or what?
Just because you haven't outgrown the superbowl, don't imagine that no one has.
Gregrandar, I don't think I have to immerse myself in video culture to do an objective critique? "From the outside" is a valid position if my analysis uses empirical data and a recognizable system of logic, (which I don't find in "those I bitch about". I can present way more data, would be happy to do so if it is my premise you dispute. Are you wishing to present a defense of computer games? Are you invested in them? Can't I watch the Superbowl from a sociologists point of view?
