Might Makes Rights

December 1948- December 2008: Sixty years ago the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was approved. "But" ,according to Amnesty International, "the Southern Democrats made it very clear that a statement of universal human rights threatened the maintenence of white supremacy." "Maintenence of white supremacy" is a euphemism for lynching. Same Southern Democrats, by the way, who watched blacks drowning in New Orleans and called in Blackwater to protect their private property.

Of course everyone knew that the declaration was only meant to be, as former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles so aptly put it, a "sermon on the mount" and not some legal document.
"As the United Nations turned to develop the declaration into a covenant- a lasting ,binding ,treaty- the US balked." It didn't want to give up State domestic jurisdiction (the "this applies to everyone but us,we'll handle our own affairs" principle) and it wouldn't support "communistic" aspirations like economic and social rights. You know, commie shit like housing ,education and healthcare. So it broke the covenant in two and at first supported political and civil rights but eventually abandoned both. ( sticking with sovereignty and lynching).

Eventually we "signed but never ratified the covenant on Economic ,Social and Cultural Rights and when we finally ratified the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, we did so with so many exceptions as to render it virtually meaningless."

So when you hear the talk of a "shining city on the hill" or "beacon of hope" or other such nonsense, you might consider that the entire discourse of "human rights" is a liberal shibboleth, a fetish which takes the place of talking about actual justice and not worth the rope around a black mans neck or the hood over a "suspected insurgents" head. Like the Bill of Rights, the Universal Declaration is a lovely sermon. You do have the right to remain silent and most people exercise that one quite well.

damn, pull many punches, troutsky?

It's like that Jack Nicholson line about freedom in "Easy Rider" (I kinda dislike the movie), "Talking about it and being it are two different things".

Simply by wanting a modicum of universal justice and a fairer distribution of the fruits of labor you become a moonbat, a commie. You get called a socialist as if that's an insult.

On Saturday local Maoists are having a Human Rights Day rally. Needless to say, Chinese denial of national minority rights, won't be mentioned.

This group supports FARC, North Korea and probably Mugabe.

Most of the time, their secretive.

In practice they are like the CP, only louder.

"Universal Rights". LOL!

Nietzsche, WtP 858 (Nov. 1887-March 1888)

What determines your rank is the quantum of power you are: the rest is cowardice.

I was reacting to the hoopla.I remain a supporter of Amnesty Int.and local "rights" groups, gltb issues, minority issues and such. I just think talk of "natural rights' or "God given rights" needs to be tempered with a realization of how fragile the edifice is and how it is tied to power.

Ren, do the Maoists support Chinese regime or striking workers and protesters? What is their main propaganda organ?

In other news, Smithfield Foods, a very large meat packing operation in North Carolina voted in a union recently after the courts ruled the union ballot must be secret.

Law allowing secret ballot should be a priority for this administration. Obama is said to be supportive and he needs to be held to it as well as being held to true health insurance reform.

CB, Skepticism is a very good thing, what can be tricky is being skeptical of the skeptics.I checked the site and was immediately intrigued because I know Oklahoma Sen Imhofe's politics.(always examine your source for bias)I am reminded of 9/11 conspiricy sites where mere numbers of "experts" is substituted for actual peer reviewed study. You find a physicist, geologists, meteorologists, a "researcher",a "statitician,a "professor in the department of chemicals and materials engineering" all giving their OPINIONS, which no one gives a shit about. Impressive sounding folks like James Pedan of the "Space Research and Coordination Center in Pittsburgh (it is in his garage) an "environmental scientist and founder of the Numerical Weather Forecast Group" (it's in his head) ,a chancellor, a paleontologist...the fact is nobody but Inhofe and his ideological brethren (pro-oil, pro big business) care what these people THINK, it's what they can prove that matters.
Do you think the whole UN IPCC is green Marxists hoping to end capitalist development?

Ducky , the whole "secret ballot" vs card check issue is being deliberatly obfuscated by anti-union forces. They claim Employee Free Choice Act is anti- secret ballot and therefore undemocratic. It does circumvent elections because elections have been subverted by pro-boss NLRB rulings and zero enforcement of current election law.I think I blogged about it a while back,if not I will soon.

A reference. After Nietzsche's death, his sister collected all of Nietzsche's notes and released them under the title: "Will to Power"

This is there page.

They think China is socialist. Obviously they are against Tibet.

They want popular front formations, so they keep quiet about their politics.
