Stand Up Time
It seems to be accepted knowledge that the War President is devising some sort of escalation in Iraq in opposition to the advice of his generals, Iraq Study Group , every serious analyst and against the will expressed by the American electorate. No real surprise there, it is the cowards way to retreat into ever less rational behavior when confronted with his overwhelming malfeasance and guilt. The question is, what will be the reaction? It is also accepted opinion that any opposition to this plan will have to come from "the Democrats". We must reject that notion. This is the last opportunity to salvage the last shred of real democracy in this country and it's up to the people to take back the power they have ceded, not some idiot political party.
The man picked by the new Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to head the House intelligence committee is a knucklehead named Sylvestre Reyes. He got the job because he is Hispanic and that means votes. In an interview he said he "plans to focus on Latin America, particularly Venezuela. President Hugo Chavez has influenced elections acrosss Latin America, has called Bush the devil and has ALIGNED himself with Iran." Sounds like somebody sonia-belle could get behind. When asked if he knew whether al Qaeda was Sunni or Shiia, Reyes babbled a little then guessed wrong. He got the name recognition to get where he is today "through his agressive programs to secure the porous border in El Paso." So he's also got the Tom Tancredo vote.
The minute Bush calls for increased troop levels we need to shut this whole thing down. General strike, barricades in the highways, huge marches in every city and town. Game over. Fuck the Democrats. One day of national paralysis to save a lot of lives from being needlessly wasted. Whadda ya say? By the way, happy new year!

If we were all organized in ONE BIG UNION of classconscious workers, we could call an effective GENERAL STRIKE. As the situation stands, we can at least use our voices to explain to our fellow workers that the war in not in our collective class interests. It IS however in the collective class interests of the ruling capitalist class to maintain some kind of certainty and control over the second largest proven source of oil in the world. That won't be the way this venture will be marketed though...no, it will be, "if we don't keep sending prolo troopies to Iraq, we'll be sending the wrong signals to the TERRORISTS.
Actually, look for deals to be made between the USA and the Syrian rulers and the Kurdish rulers, with some divide and rule finessing against the pro-Persian elements among the Shias of the South.
I can understand Bush escalating the war. This doesn't mean his actions are defensible, anything but, yet in order to save face we need to win, yes sir, so he can have a wonderful legacy.
But the Democrats behavior is absolutely inexcusable. I seem to recall that Dante placed those who refused to take a side in a moral crisis outside of hell. During life they would align with no one, thus in death they forever march under a banner, and no one will align with them. Cowards all!
Every day is national paralysis day around my house. As soon as I get the solar panels operational it will get even slower.
Mike, Im suggesting that this kind of historical moment might be the perfect time to both build class concsiousness but to also transcend the typical notion and unite on a more popular front. Small d democrats with myriad identities realize more than ever the tyrannical aspects of what is happening, how the people are being shoved aside. They might stop work and join in mass protest for this cause, if not for more workplace power, which would be the next phase.
gregrandgar, your solar panels might stop the next war from starting, but to save lives in 07 we'll need you in the streets very soon.
Trout,
How do we do it? Who should we call today?! Are you ready to call on the Central Labor Council? CAJA? The Peace Center? Students?
I'm ready to barricade a few key choke points in this town. You in? Let's call the Free Schoolers, Wild West, Wilderness CPR, the anarchists, SESJ, Wellstone Liberation Front, IWW, et. al.
Is it time for "shock and awe"?
Bush would be choking the poodle if he chooses to escalate the war. How he can imagine that this will improve his legacy is beyond me.
I believe that a huge demonstration would certainly be noticed by the White House, but would it work? Troutsky noted all the current opposition: doesn't Bush pay attention?
ADD on steroids, brother Bill.We are talking serious psychopath or maybe he smokes bud.We are planning a direct action in downtown Missoula. What are people putting together in Portland?
