Overload

I spent a month organizing and advertising a presentation by Colombian social leader Yaneth Perez here in my little community. Eight people showed up. In my introduction I was on the verge of exploding into a rant on the pathetic nature of our society (fortunately ,I held back) and I left angry and embarrassed that she had travelled so far, risked so much, expended so much energy to try to reach us and ask for some help. At the end of the talk I sat down next to my friend Julie and noticed she was crying. She said "what is going on in the world?"

Now as I reflect on this I remember my own analysis, that we are indeed pathetic but we are collectively traumatized to a point which has not yet been adequately explained. We are now in the middle of our own Clockwork Orange and people have retreated to their televisions. Even our "anti-war" protests are pathetic. The War , the school shootings, global warming, the violence in Africa, Colombia, the only logical and human reaction is Julies. We should all be crying. Or we could watch Survivor, Deal or No Deal, The Apprentice perhaps, or American Idol.

There was a meeting in Wyoming yesterday to discuss the "de-listing" of wolves from the Endagered Species List. The news described it as "raucus" and I can imagine the cowboy hats and the collective ire aimed at this reviled creature which eats their cows and the Federal government which tries to protect it. I know if I really wanted to put together a "raucus" crowd here in this little town I would need to put on a Monster Truck rally with country western singers with large breasts. Some Spectacle with no meaning, no social or political import, something which better exploits the shift in the structure of experience, the hollow facade through which we grope each day. 113 killed in Mogadishu yesterday. Perhaps a tent Revival?

I remember someone posted a comment here a few months back wondering if Americans were too stupid for social justice. While I wouldn't say stupid, they might be too ignorant. Willfully ignorant. Actually, willful ignorance is pretty much stupidity.

This sounds like an expert opinion on your part. The advocacy of Social Justice itself is idiocy.
Rights belong to individuals and not classes, but your kind keeps getting it wrong every time.

Trout,
I know your heart is in the right place, but it seems you keep forgetting that testimony to atrocity elsewhere doesn't threaten the ox of the good ole boys in yer home town, and never will until they are made to envision troopers marching down the ruined street they live on. Exceptionalism is a hard shell of rose colored glasses that keeps on working right up until someone smashes them along with their head.
Beakerkin is an exception to the exception, he wears blinders.

What makes you different anonymous? Do you hate us or love us (socialists/lefties)? Could it be that you hate and love us ("commies")at the same time? Or do you just love us? What will you have done to us when you are boss? Would you have us re-re-educated, re-repatriated, re-re-re all the way home?

We know far too little about each other in here to understand the full meaning of comments such as Troutsky's or yours. There is far too little context to pass judgments like yours. He is an amazingly kind and compassionate individual that gives a great deal of his time, money and life energy to the cause of serving others and caring about the improvement of all life. You may hear hypocrisy and contradiction in some comments but there are more rational and civil ways of responding.

What seems especially pathetic is that yours and Beakerkin's "disdain" for Troutsky or any of us is only as real as the surgery on "Grey's Anatomy." Do think you actually hate us? Are you here to actually help us see the light? Or do you just want to insult us? Are you interested in rational dialogue with us? Or are you here to convince yourself? Convince others? What are you hiding from? Are you anonymous, and beakerkin hateful because you both fear something?

Would it be totally unfair to pass a virtual-world judgment against you and assume that you are a selfish American pig who believes he has an exceptional, divine right to more than his share? Are you a racist? Bigot? Redneck? Woman? Man? Saint? Atheist? Christian? Muslim? Jew? Old? Young? We know very little about each other in here, all the more reason to keep it above the belt.

For all intents and purposes, we could--from the tone of your comments, your unwillingness to come out from behind your identity and/or to take a risk in offering your own solutions to existing problems--make some very nasty assumptions about the kind of person you are. In fact, we are left only to assumptions because of your glib comments and your fear of exposure.

Troutsky's feelings are appropriate. It is very frustrating to watch an entire society remain ignorant of the ills of this world regardless of your ideas for how best to resolve them. It is painful to watch so many Americans asleep at the wheel, knowing that we consume an unfair share of the world's resources will the majority of the world suffers.

Anon and beak, let's try a simple experiment. Can you answer the following questions?

1. Are Americans ignorant of most world issues?

2. If so, why are they ignorant?

3. Is it possible to feel frustration that those with so much, know so little about how they got so much?

4. Is the current political and economic system perfect? If not, why not? How would you fix it?

5. Should Americans care about the problems in Colombia?

6. Did Troutsky call anyone "fat, stupid and racist"?

7. Has anyone in here said that they are the "only ones that get it"?

I work with people from over 20 countries ( I am the only American on my shift at my department) and every single one of them knows more about American politics than most of my American friends. Ask yourself how many times you have heard someone say something like "i don't really pay attention to politics" or "he looks like he would be fun to have a beer with, I'd vote for him." I had a friend with a 4 year college degree ask me what language they speak in Europe. This is not that uncommon.

Class genocide is not funny and to be honest all of you clowns are freaks. You are one two steps removed from the VT nut.

Rights belong to individuals not groups and you clowns get this wrong. Do visit my blog as soon as I get my copy of the Fontonova book we are going to have fun with the Che myth.

I have visited your blog Beak and you do " have fun" with your ridicule. My critique at least involves a desire to understand, and i admit i cross the line due to frustration and become dismissive. As for "rights belong to individuals , not classes", this is actually kind of interesting and the kind of ground for further discussion I try to promote. Perhaps "class" is not the right milue under which to aggregate rights but any collection of individuals with the same interests woulsd then also entail the collection of those rights. I asked awhile back about where those rights originate, about whether "the right to self-determination" wan't a tautological redundancy.Do we need a "right" to determine our own destiny? Is it a divine right? A social compact?

Graemes use of the term social justice speaks to the knowledge not everyone in capitalist society has the same interests and that groupings can be formed around those divergent interests. Under socialism the term social justice might someday dissapear. He is also aware of test results when Americans are given geography exams. Not pretty.

Gregrandgar, wasn't Jesus' message that we can care about our Brothers and Sisters from distant communities? Buddha didnt say anything about limits to compassion either.Internationalism is a belief we can evolve into a broader "caring".Che Bob hit the nerve, the "pain"which sometimes causes me to lose patience and forget about the nature of struggle. It's just that my head is sore from beating it against the wall for so many years. You folks are my aspirin ,thanks.

Troutsky

The second you advance Group rights you have gone into totalitariansm. Rights belong to individuals not classes.

Equality of opportunity does not mean equality of results. The mere presence of a statistical anomality does not infer injustice.

You also get no credit for rehashing bad ideas that have dire consequences in every application.
Utopia does not exist and all those who seek to create it in this world are fools. Toynbee was correct that Communism is a surrogate for religion, except those Christians you mock build hospitals and schools and you build prisons, huge collective prisons.

Sorry Trousky, the masses are smarter than you think.

We may be arguing at cross purposes here, i never insisted "group rights' superceded those of the individual, just that they are in relation to them. Unless you deny the existence of civil rights or citizens in general? how about "We the People", are we not a group with rights?

As for totalitarianism, I think you trivialize it's true horror with a simple explanation of loss of rights. As Hannah Arendt put it, "Totalitarianism strives not toward despotic rule over men, but toward a system in which men are superfluous", in other words, men "after murder of the moral person and the annihilation of the juridical person, the destruction of the individuality" become simple stimulus response animals.A "juricical person" is one who as a citizen of a nation-state has civil rights. Is this an individual ? Sure. Is this a group? Sure.

I never said people are equal in the social sense, only in the political. I realize the difference between sameness and equality.I don't mock Christians who stay true to christs teachings and I believe the masses or multitude or people have wisdom but Nazism and Stalinism should teach us something about blindness. And Bush loyalists.

Another tangent to approximate circle of truth all conversations stalk: Yes Trout, whenever, wherever any brother or sister is abused we are all injured and true compassion is limitless, but we must weigh that against "out of sight, out of mind," as another way things work when attempting to have a locsl effect. Getting busted at a local, peaceful protest is a better, more immediate and poignant wake up to your neighbors than a two-hours slide show of atrocities occuring to people they don't know.

That's a rather surprising argument coming Beakerkin. Does he think the State of Israel has no right to exist? That the Jewish People have no right to national self-determination? Does that make Beakerkin an anti-Semite? Stay tuned ....

Well, thank heavens Christians never build huge collective prisons. Imagine what the inmate population in this country might be then.

I know that if a low turnout at an event hear or there, has never stopped Troutsky, from the fight for social justice.

Troutsky and his friends, have more knowledge about the issues, more experience in organizing events, than the average American Idol viewer. That is what leadership is about.

Conditions don't stay static. The country singers he was talking about, might be the next "Dixie Chicks".

It's more than about meetings. Troutsky studies political economy and theory. It's about program and leadership. It's about being at the right place at the right time.

Back to the classic ingrained anti semitism of Communists. The subject always comes back to the Judeopathy that typifies your ranks. I guess the current residents of Brooklyn are Canarsie Indians next.

Social Justice is group rights and the progression goes directly to totalitarianism. This is the mindset that leads to Killing Fields, Gulags and class slaughter.
The entire notion is flawed and proves a disaster in every application.

Communists like in a sick fantasy world where the mere presence of a
malady requires a radical solution.
Rhodesia was a horrible place so Commies backed Mugabe who has turned a food exporter into a nation where famine is real. Every application of Marx fails because
the theory doesn't work.

You might not like next weeks disection of the Che myth.

Communism is a dead end. The notion that the unwashed masses need you to guide them borders on delusional elitism.
