End of Angst

Remember when people used to worry about the meaning of life? That whole Kerouac/ Herzog thing was eclipsed by the Age of Irony. We had Warhol, punk, Madonna and the travails of Real Life- such as -how to die with the most toys and win. With a wink and a nod people dismissed all things sublime, subliminal, or transubstantiated and learned to love the Simpsons and the suburbs.

Now we have entered the post Irony age where The Donald is proud to have forced up a birth certificate and in so doing tops the polls. If Jim is ironic, Dwight is post-ironic.(Office reference)
Swift Boat Veterans are post-ironic. Joe the Plumber is post-ironic. They look in the fun house mirror and don't make a joke about it, don't worry about it, they just accept exactly what they see. They make the most of being plugged in.

I think what Zizek calls cultural capitalism is post-ironic. A full page ad in Mother Jones invites us to the Lohas Forum at the St.Julien Spa in Boulder Co. which will focus on the "expansion of the $290 billion dollar Conscious Consumer marketplace" (Their capitals)
Topics include:

Conscious Capitalism
The Emerging Sheconomy
Social Entrepreneurship
Moving from Transaction to Transformation

There are pictures of really healthy people doing yoga and holding seedlings and looking at mountains. They are all smiling or seriously engaged. Because you can do good AND do well. Save the earth with every purchase.

Of course Boulder is ground zero for the whole spiritual hierarchy, the enlightened ones who are so much more special than the rest of us, but patient.( fortunately) They have come full circle to the post ironic sublime. Mostly through expensive workshops, smudge sticks, drum circles and fair trade sprouts. Hipster entrepreneurs who donate 1% of before-tax profit to Tibet are the worst counter-revolutionaries.

People love to make money Trout. I think the people you're talking about are silly, maybe even delusional, but it just goes to show you, for all their pie-in-the-sky feel good bullshit about peace and love, they just aren't ready to take that extra step and live in a world of total fantasy. It just doesn't put food on the table.

Irony died in Boulder with Allen Ginsberg.

Pagan: Who is talking about not making $$?

Evidently, Troutsky was. Otherwise, what was the point of his post? He was complaining about what I would describe as a bunch of hipsters in Colorado making money, even though they were trying to be responsible about it. Maybe I skimmed through it too fast but that's the way it read.

Yeah, it is about profit, a little different than "money". That they probably treat their employees with respect and drive hybrids is a good thing but it doesn't erase the destructive logic it supports.

Anyway, Happy May Day! Maybe this will be the year people get tired of the boot( or the environmentally friendly Earth Shoe) on their neck.

So what the hell is wrong with making a profit? Do you think people are going to invest their time, effort, and money to break even? Get real.

Pagan, I'm afraid the investing class will continue to do mischief, as we've seen for the last 30 years (and more but it's more obvious now).
Daisy and Tom Buchanan weren't a couple who were just trying to get a decent return in their 401K so they could retire.

As for "cultural capitalism", trout. Starbuck's forever. Home to every young hipster plotting a blow against the empire. Get yourself some Ben & Jerry's(owned by Unilever) ice cream because they care about the rain forest.
I will say again that the destruction of a progressive culture by the advertising industry is the crux of much of our trouble and a blow we make not recover from.

Holy shit, now Ben and Jerry's isn't progressive enough for you? Starbucks? Ducky, your one slim chance (a damn slim one) of your philosophy working would be dependent on entities like that.

Now you tell me, if the whole world goes communist, who's going to make ice cream? Is that going to be a government agency too?

Oh, I'm sorry-Make mine "Citizen's Council Chocolate".

Nothing new, Pagan. Naomi Klein covered aspects of it in, "NO LogO".

A world without joy. That's all I see coming down the pike if we go this route. No entrepreneurs, no investors, equals, no ideas, no new innovations, no significant inventions of anything. Maybe a few needed efficiencies here and there, and that's the extent of it, if that.

Otherwise, just stand in the queue for your next loaf of bread you lubbers.

What a rotten world you guys promise.

By the way Troutsky, do you see the irony in complaining about investors and business people expecting to make a profit for their investments and the time, work, and planning that goes into them, while at the same time you support government workers demanding tax increases to fund their ever increasing demands for higher wages and benefits?

It's always struck me of emblematic of this contradiction that Whole Foods, beloved of 'greens' everywhere, is virulently anti-union.

Pagan: Do you support tax increases to help rebuild states smashed by tornadoes?

And soon to come floods? Those anti-tax governors were suddenly all about Obama and his check book.

I thought that was already included in the budget. Disaster relief is a legitimate use of federal funds anyway. What in the hell does that have to do with the EPA, FDA, Energy Department, etc?
