Lovin Harpers
Graeme opens up a good discussion on the feature article, Disaster Capitalism, by Naomi Klien (put her name on The List, Beak) but I want to mention the opener in the new Harpers, the notebook piece. Titled Specific Suggestion: General Strike by Garret Keizer, it is the first thing I have read in some time to confront the Spectacle head on and present the only real solution to our present historical dilemna. Check it out:
"Of all the various depredations of the Bush regime, none has been so thorough as it's plundering of hope." I personally would extend that analysis way beyond "the Bush regime" but whatever... "What was supposed to have been the crux of our foreign policy- a shock-and-awe tutorial on the utter futility of any opposition to the whims of American power- has achieved it's greatest success in the American soul."
Again, we would have to probe a little deeper into the workings of the Fog Machine to understand why people like Beak actually cry out for more hosing while trying to convert others to the hose, but this aptly describes the average drone, wandering the concorse of the Mall looking for some meaning. And his prescription is right on. November 6 2007. General strike with the sole purpose of removing this regime from power. A "velvet revolution" of the kind praised so warmly by the Bushies themselves. Im in!
We spent three mind- numbing hours last night watching a documentary produced by a local joe who shows up at our meetings looking for converts to his fight against The New World Order. Ive blogged about Tim's "unified theory" before but I never realized the grand nature of it's pure totality. Using the Holy Bible, Nostradamus, and Alex Jones' infowars.com he has woven a tale of intrigue going back to the Illuminati, through the Masons and Skull and Bones clear into the Council on Foreign Relations. Tied in of course are the the USS Liberty, the Tonkin Gulf, Federal Reserve Bank, Karl Marx, the Bohemian Grove, the assasination of Kennedy, burning of the Reichtstagg, the Oklahoma City bombing, Nero,Bush's grandfather and the Carnegies. And way,way more. It all leads to, you guessed it, 9/11 and it's all foretold in Revelations. It is a crazy mixture of left-wing ideology, right-wing raving, libertarian theory and pure paranoia.
I love it! All history is wrapped up with a neat little bow, far neater even than Marx's dialectical materialism. Apparently, all the lovers of freedom need to do is surround the Bohemian Grove ( I used to spend childhood Easter vacations in Gurneyville, California!) and take out the revelers as they are burning the giant statue of Mamon. It's what Superman would do.

Harper's runs circles around the Nation or The Atlantic. It is a great somewhat mainstream magazine. I read that general strike piece as well.
I watched a bit of "freedom to fascism" and concluded it was largely nonsense, I didn't even finish it.
I have a good friend that keeps trying to get me to watch "loose change" a 9/11 conspiracy movie. He is convinced it was an inside job. I wish he would simply read the news and leave the conspiracy crap alone. Is it a secret or conspiracy that we are being lied to and controlled by a ruling class?
Sorry Trout, but you and Graeme sound like Creationists with literal faith in the government (who you both attest to distrusting) Bible, the 911 Commission Report and refusing to even look at the heretics' observations. It is sludge of the same nature you claim to being characteristic of the ones you oppose.
Reason for independent investigation number umpteen and three: with a plethora of surveillance cameras in operation able to see the side of the Pentagon clearly, there are no pictures of a plane!!! Why would the government do that???
Actually greg I just sat through four hours of it.And there are admittedly tons of intriguing questions raised. There is also lots of blurring and semantic twisting going on but as a born sceptic (even of left wing dogma, I might add), I have to ask how and why? How to pull off such a grandiose scheme with so many actors and why bother going to so much effort when television, public education and WalMart have proven to be so effective? If a New World Order where the rulers can get rich and powerful, well, I would suggest they achieved that centuries ago and it's called the profit system. It rules every corner of the globe, how much more hegemony could they desire? I have lots of questions of my own like where did the missle come from? Where did the plane go? Why bother with a missle or blow up the towers if the idea was to strike fear into the hearts of Americans? Planes weren't scary enough?
If you accept 9/11 conspiracy, you might as well accept Creationism. Things like that, don't just go in a straight line.
Troutsky is correct, that it's a big conspiracy to keep quiet.
I will have to check out Harpers.
Naomi Klein did a marvelous job of covering the whys with her book, Shock Doctrine, showing how sweeping changes in policy in the aftermath of traumatic tragedy is a strategy. 9/11, Katrina, Tsunami in Indonesia all are ripe for government "stragedy" legislation.
And doubting the government's role in 9/11 due to the enormity of the plan while swallowing the ridiculous theory that 19 Arabs with box cutters could accomplish the same thing is just plain pig headed. Pyramid schemes can involve thousands carrying out little tasks with only the top knowing the plan.
"I wish he would simply read the news and leave the conspiracy crap alone. Is it a secret or conspiracy that we are being lied to and controlled by a ruling class?"
What news would you have him read graeme the ones controlled by the ruling class. I just read the
Terror Enigma by Justin Raimondo. The message dilivered was that Israel knew or should of known that 9/11 was about to happen and did not tell us. A recent article by Chrisopher Ketcham appearing in Counterpunch on developments since Ramaindo's book update this information. I'll admit that some of the theories about 9/11 may be over the top. But I think that our government may be an important part of this disinformation. I think Greg is right. Be skeptical, just not foolish. I am still waiting for the report about how building 7 collapsed. The one not even hit by an airplane.
He forgot the Jesuits. (Insert maniacal laugh here.)
How to pull off such a grandiose scheme with so many actors and why bother going to so much effort when television, public education and WalMart have proven to be so effective?
People will always feel more affinity for their country than for their class. Them's the breaks Marxists.
Also, it's good to see someone is reading Raimondo. You might like him, Trout. Anyway, he'd make you think.
I have an easier time with the possibility we were warned and did nothing, but you guys are right, I should be able to at least entertain the idea of pre-planted explosives coordinated with the planes. They are a vicious lot, Im not sure they are all that competent.19 Arabs would be much easier to coordinate than numerous coldblooded CIA agents planting explosives and shooting missles totally under the radar.
Naomi reasons as I do: "The truth is at once less sinister and more dangerous...Given the boiling temperatures, both climatic and political, future disasters need not be cooked up in dark conspiricies.Disaster generation can be left to the market's invisible hand. This is one area in which it actually delivers."
What news would you have him read graeme the ones controlled by the ruling class.
Well, one thing Chomsky astutely points out is that you really can learn a great deal about what's actually going on by reading the corporate press -- you just have to read it intelligently.
In this age of internet, LWB, there is decent news out there. You just have to dig for it. That is what I was getting at.
Michael Neumann (who wrote a wonderful book called 'the case against Israel') talks about how American's have this proud attitude that won't accept that "19 Arabs" could possibly pull something like that off. It has to be an inside job, we are the only ones capable enough to do it.
I think there is ample evidence that suggests 9/11 was preventable, and there definitely are unanswered questions, but from what I have seen there is no evidence of a conspiracy.
actually, the conspiracy brings up more questions for me. Especially the Pentagon attack. People saw the plane hit the Pentagon, were they all paid off by the government? Passengers in the plane were identified by their dental remains in the wreckage. Do we suppose that that was all planted? Perhaps a big hologram machine and a bucket full of teeth? Where did all the passengers of the plane that supposedly didn't hit the Pentagon end up? The Bermuda triangle?
Actually Graeme I've seen that you have the counterpunch logo on your blog. The Ketcham article concerning the Israeli spies was published by counterpunch(because no one else would publish it).At the time of publication Cockburn and Ketcham appeared on Democracy Now. They did not suggest that 911 was an inside job. That is not what I am saying either. The conspiracy came after 911 when the White House shut down the investigation of the Israeli spy network. What are the probabilities that the addresses of several of the hijackers living in New Jersey would be within a mile of the Mossad "Urban Moving Company" spies. What are the probablities that the addresses remaiming hijackers including their ring leader would be wihtin a mile of the Israeli art student spies in Hollywood Florida. What are the probabilies that convicted 20th hijacker in Oklahoma would be surrounded by more Mossad art students.
I'm own for a general strike BUT there hasn't been a successful one in the dysfunctional nation since the 1930's. Then there were all those pissed-off unemployed & underemployed with free time and better support systems. It will take a TREMENDOUS effort to pull off a general strike here & now in the belly of the beast. All those anti-war/anti-bush groups would have to put aside their differances and work together. All theose disempowered, fearful citizens would have to turn-off their tv's & monitors and get into the street. It's a GIGANTIC undertaking, which is not to say it shouldn't be done....NOW!
LWB,
I get the counterpunch print version and I read that article. Definitely some questions need to be answered. We are pretty much on the same page.
The second part of my last ramble was more directed at people that believe in was an inside job. I should have stated that.
I have a good friend that keeps trying to get me to watch "loose change" a 9/11 conspiracy movie.
there definitely are unanswered questions, but from what I have seen there is no evidence of a conspiracy.
Here we have the classic example of maintaining plausible deniability with one self: from one comment to the other Graeme rails against someone trying unsuccessfully attempting to show him some evidence he may not know, to the next where claims to have seen no evidence!!!! Wake up folks!!!!
I watched a debate on Democracy Now between the Loose Change folks and some people that fact checked their movie. In my view, it isn't credible. Perhaps you are right though, I shall give it a chance. It is only fair.
The most obvious argument against the 9/11 conspiracy (as an inside job)is simply that there is no way that the many actors needed to pull it off could possibly keep their mouths shut afterwards. Human nature being what it is and with today's chaotic narcisistic component, it defies logic and just does'nt make any sense. Don't get me wrong, I like a good conspiracy mystery but the 9/11 one is way too far-fetched.
One mistake in semantics I have become aware of through these comments is that the government and its backers have shifted the "conspiracy"label from the 9/11 Commission fairytail to the truth movement "moonbats" who don't claim to have a complete theory so much as some highly relevant questions about omissions and erroneous claims in the establishment's conspiracy theory. With the access available to government black ops any time they want it, a great number of operatives are not required to perform the criminal activities, and even they may not know the planned results in the world of need to know.
Resistance to entertaining these questions by otherwise intelligent people is the best evidence I know to validate investigation reports into government mind control research.
becbWell, I'm of the opinion that 9/11 and 7/7 were both inside jobs. I've taken a while to come around to that conclusion but I think it is inescapable. I didn't get the conclusion from Loose Change either. In fact, I'd guess that the wackier theories going around are disinformation and clustering.
You'd have to be a consiracy theorist to believe the official version, which is litttle more than a fabrication serving to cover up many many details. And an obvious cover up to boot.
The commissioners were all interested parties and the author, Zelikow is a zionist zealot with form.
A conspiracy does not involve many people knowing the plan or the truth. The natuure of a conspiracy is the exact opposite.
If anyone believes that the invasion of Afghanistan was not preplanned and/or that the Patriot Act was written in 3 weeks, they're living in cloud cuckoo land.
Even if I were inclined to believe any of these possible conspiracies, my feeling is that it doesn't change that we have so much work to do. Spending/wasting huge amounts of human energy to learn about conspiracies won't get us one step closer to preventing the next one.
Blogging about it, when I could be out organizing is problematic. Perhaps the biggest conspiracy is that we've been led to banal time-wasting in front of our computers when we should be doing more. What a safe, self-policing activity.
The cops are in our heads!
Trout, see you on the streets!
Who says 9/11 went according to plan, or that how it actually went with respect to the plan deserves to be called grandiose? If it was an inside job, the only thing we can certainly say that the conspirators have succeeded in is in sufficiently suppressing doubt of the official story domestically. Who says we have to believe anything? Who has the credibility to be believed here? Isn't it outrageous enough that so much crucial evidence appears never to have been exhibited to journalist, and we don't even know to who has seen it or if anybody knows a chain of custody for anything. How extensive an honor system and how elaborate an assumption of due diligence do we have to assume to believe nobody extremely high in authority didn't secretly arrange something extremely nefarious? Far too extensive and far too elaborate. "Troy" was a myth before Schliemann dug it up. The whole "New World" was a myth chronicled by medieval Vikings before Colombus stumbled on it. The truth will out, if you're willing to sit out a civilization or two and human dark ages always end happily.
