There has been much ink spilled over the large demonstrations in Caracas last week that erupted in violence. A video on UTube, supposedly by a young Venezuelan ex-pat has gone viral after The Guardian gave it kudos for its entrepreneurial spirit. They seem unconcerned that it is an amazing piece of propaganda filled with lie after lie. But no matter who you believe is responsible for the violence and no matter how you feel about capitalism, it must be admitted that having that many young students committed to ending the Bolivarian Revolution is a bad sign for Chavismo and his project of 21st Century socialism.. Plenty of ink has also been spilt over the rate of violent crime, the food shortages, the inflation and such but what strikes me is the incredible appeal of capitalist ideology to a generation of young latinas and latinos. They worship free markets and individualism and all the tropes about liberty and upward mobility. It is a whole generation of Beaks, able to ignore history and accept the jingoist propaganda unquestioningly. Notice also the color of their skin as you watch them march through the streets, the brands of jeans they are wearing. It is the revolt of the bourgeoise with money and weapons and media at their disposal. They yearn for the good old days of Perez when brown and black people stayed in their slums.

The situation in Ukraine might appear similar at first but the dynamic is far different.
I've come to believe that the country is better off moving closer to Russia than giving in to a violent nationalism or the ministrations of EU (IMF lite) austerity.
The free (LMAO) market will continue to be the measure of all things as we compute the price of everything and fail to understand the value.
Meanwhile, The Popular Will Party in Venezuela seems to have minority backing and we have NO idea that it is a genuine popular movement or one ginned up by outside agitators.
Most of the world isn't happy with something. If only we could all be hedge fund managers or venture capitalists.

The EU (a pox on it) tries to finesse the Ukrainian speaking portion with a promise of, ready for it, the Free Market. Yes sir, but the agreement states they have to drop economic ties to Russia (can't divest any profit).
That's not going to happen and you may have a civil war. It's very nasty and this talk of sanctions only amplifies the schism.
Then we have the Rudy Republicans in America like Beak who will be on hand when the government falls trying to figure out how to scoop up national assets at 20 cents on the dollar. A true oligarch at heart.

Little has changed since the 2002 coup except one faction of the right(Lopez) is instigating confrontation and violence and one (Capriles) is still hoping for dialogue and votes. Where the CIA and USAID are is anybody's guess.
Venezuela is not Honduras. I am critical of the PVSU for many of their policies but violent gun culture and corruption are embedded after generations of dysfunction.
I watched Stephen Cohen on Democracy Now (prof NY University and Princeton),it was his opinion that there is a deep, historical East West divide in Ukrainian society. Is this your experience? He felt it was a frightening opportunity for neo-fascist forces to gain legitimacy and control and start a civil war with horrific consequences for the region.
