Soon it seems the citizens of the US will be owners of shares in home mortgages. 700 billion worth. (worth?) Perhaps they will begin to desire a democracy so they can have a say in how their shares are managed. If this takes root they may demand "shares" in many more aspects of the productive economy, including nationalized banks , power companies, factories and distibution networks. They may see how they,the workers, have been played for fools by the ruling elite who always convinced them that only THEY should own and manage, THEY should do the investing, THEY would allow wealth to trickle down.
Some are seeing the crisis as an opportunity for a social democracy to assert itself, as a step on the path to socialism. I remain skeptical of this market approach. Nerudas poem comes from a collection titled Fully Empowered. In the introduction, Alastair Reid writes:
"The word pueblo invokes in Spanish much more than either a place or the people who inhabitit: it humanizes a place as a state of being,as a set of values and allegiances."
This begs the question as to whether Americans could consider themselves "el pueblo".This unity unravels so quickly when faced with core issues and only presents itself when we are attacked. 159,000 more jobs were lost in September. Can unity arise from shared misfortune?

I'm surprised that I've not seen any references to the early 20th Century Marxist economist Rudolf Hilferding in the discussions about the current financial crisis. OK, I'm not really surprised. But I do think Hilferding is very relevant. He argued that the emergence of monopoly finance capitalism could potentially be a step toward socialism, because (to oversimplify somewhat) it would be easier for a workers' revolution to seize control of concentrated finance capital than it would to expropriate a more diversified class of expropriators. And if monopoly finance capital is socialized, it wouldn't be necessary directly to socialize other aspects of capital (land, production facilities, etc.), because they could be indirectly subject to social control through control of finance.
Of course, Hilferding didn't think that would necessarily happen (and boy was he right about that!), only that the concentration of finance capital was a potential opening that Marx hadn't anticipated.
State capitalism is close to what describes the bailout.
It's funny that both McCain and Obama, could agree to a measure, that would make sure, any major initiatives, will not be or be difficult to fund.
I'm tired of the rightist bloggers, who blame everything on mortgage borrowers. They have not one word about the greedy speculators, who were more than glad to sell off the debt on the mortgages, and make tons of $$$.
