Crystal Ball Gazing

I could wait for tomorrow to say I-Told-You-So but it's more fun to stick my neck out. Obama will send thirty thousand more in a staggered deployment despite Michael Moores heart-felt pleas: "with just one speech tomorrow night you will turn a multitude of young people...into cynics...you will destroy the hopes and dreams so many millions placed in you."

Actually, the only hope shattered was the one I had that after the capitalism movie Moore had finally developed a more sophisticated analysis of systems, but alas. He reminds Obama of "This great civilization we call America" ( the whole thing is a bit melodramatic) but he is infected with Americanism much like Beak. The question is: Will they become "cynics", apathetic, paralyzed, etc? OR will they become realists,ie mature, careful in their analysis, awake, even invigorated with new understanding? In other words; Radicalized?

Another question: Were Moore and other "progressive populists" responsible for building false hope to such a point that a debilitating crash was inevitable? Obama is also recognizing the new Honduran coup-supported President. He is also doing his usual head-fake end around on climate goals for Copenhagen and health-reform is an expensive gift to capital from the workers. Death by a thousand cuts. Here is what I wrote about enthusiasm loss in regards to a local graduate seminar studying the phenomenon:

“ During a visit to the University of Montana Oct 8 White House Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina spoke briefly about the political fire ignited among America's youth by President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign.” So begins an article about a group who is trying to analyse, in the words of one of it's members, “What happened? Where did all the enthusiasm go and why did it go away?”

“Messina offered no explanations why the passion subsided so rapidly.” Not surprising when we consider his role in maintaining ruling class control over a population trained to believe it participates in a democracy. This training has two parts; on the one hand drilling in the notion that “democracy” only applies to the political sphere and not the economic, and on the other, reproducing the belief that “politics” consists of voting every-so-often for a “representative”. These well meaning grad seminar students are perplexed about peoples apathy. “They do have an opinion, they do care. The weird thing is it doesn't translate to people doing stuff.” It's time these innocent students understood the role of ideology in reproducing class power and the role of the state in mediating that power. Armed with this understanding they would recognize that Jim Messina is steeped in “Americanism”, that powerful but strange ideology which is “detached and partially hidden” and which in a bi-partisan manner denies it's own existence. He is a high ranking member of “political society” and knows perfectly well how it is infiltrated by the ruling class and exactly where the revolving door to the business elite is.

The point is, Obama's and Messina's “Change We Can Believe In” has nothing to do with power. The “mass movements” this form of change advocates is all about Twitter feeds or Facebook pages, joining non-profits and paying monthly dues so you can get a newsletter which tells you to call your Congressperson. It is online donations to MoveOn.Org and filling out surveys. The young journalism students are “disappointed in the Democratic Party” because they fail to understand that it's role is to keep people from demanding change and that working within it's structure is the opposite of taking risk and using direct action, be it in the workplace or on the streets. Power rests in the mass refusal to join and the mass refusal to absorb “Americanism” or any other form of Market ideology. So the question for the graduate seminar is, how much “enthusiasm” might there be for a General Strike which demanded single-payer health insurance, or CO2 reductions or an exit from Iraq and Afghanistan or an end to Israeli settlement building or coal mining or don't ask-don't tell? How much “political fire” might be generated if they abandoned the Democratic party and demanded workers take control of workplaces and banks be nationalized and higher education be free for everyone? More than they have ever considered possible, I'm sure!

Happy Seattle WTO Anniversary!

The Boston Globe ran a very good editorial section piece on Larry Summers Sunday.
If you have not been following Harvard's recent debacles, they got torched when the Wall Street roulette wheel came up "00" and upset all their hedged bets. Layoffs, pay freezes, reduced student aid and a big hole in the ground in Brighton where they were going to build a science center. I mean a real big hole.
So it seems that Larry Summers was the talk of the town and raking it in as he doubled down the rent money while the bubble expanded. He was being told to take money off the table, but no ... he just kept on firing portfolio managers and making bets.

As long as Larry Bags is Obama's economic front man it's "bon temps roulez" on the Street (he has to restore the Harvard endowment) and a nice big plank up the arse for everyone else.

This administration is not much better than the last. The election system just won't effect change.

I'm at a point where I think Palin might be the answer. Just sink the ship of state and rebuild.

I like it Trout... let's take it to the streets... but can I watch it on TV. I don't want to be nabbed if it doesn't work! LOL

Really it is a great idea... but all American's are puppet heads; we are trained to believe this is the best system in the world (p.s. all systems suck, including Marxism and Stalinism); so we the people (i mean the masses) will never go on General Strike to demand anything... they would see that as a tear in the curtain of democracy's pure white lace pedigree.

Although, those teabaggers may be proving me wrong!!

You may be right about Palin. Like putting the three stooges togehter in the WH. It can only lead to an anarchic overthrow!

Boy George of the Kultur Klub

Lets see the historical record of communism remains a fact. Your amoral
lack of the critical judgment to discern a genocidal brutal system from a more viable system shows your degrees are worthless.

What should Americans strike for

Perhaps Americans are smarter than you and your self deluded elitists.
Who died and left you the arbiter of what the American people want?

Sorry, but arrogance and condescension should not be mistaken for wisdom.

The real Boy George was more original than this Kultur Klub hack.

At one time Michael Moore supported a labor party.

When he was in Minneapolis to promote his movie, he was asked why he supports the Dems, knowing the role they play. He replied that he's too old to be involved in the start of a new party. He told about some place in Michigan where the Democratic Party was taken over. He knows that resolutions in that party at a local level are a joke.

As for Palin and Bachman, follow the money. They do big time fundraising. They are splitting Republicans as well. The last election cycle reflected the crisis in the party.

Kulture: The masses are of different classes, with different interests. The classes themselves are also divided. Such a concept can't be seen in static fashion. The same working class that fought the Russian Revolution later allowed a Stalinist bureaucracy. They'll try a George Bush, a Ron Paul and an Obama. They sometimes vote in high numbers, and sometime abstain. They are never static.

Masses make history. There is also a role for leadership. There can be 1,000 people in a burning theater. There can be one in the 1,000 who yells where the exit is located.

Well kultur it does seem true that we have nothing like even a social democratic voice from the Dems.

I see little difference between Obama and Bush despite Beaks cries that Obama is a communist. I suspect the left is going to stay away from the 2010 election in big numbers.

Beak, would you like to continue being a rude bore with very repetitive adolescent material or maybe stick in a considered opinion now and then?

It does seem as though the 'right' - with its teabaggers - has the current leg up on a more radicalized activism.

And while it may be true that there is nothing like unanimity of sentiment in this country. I find there is an unquestioned assumption that we are the best, and our world is the WORLD.

I meet with alot of 'folks' and hear from even more; and most are very comfortable with the status quo that our nation represents... they cannot see any reason to instigate real change. Obama's election was only about changing the party in control, a vote against the Right, not against lilly white democratic capitalism. It was a vote to save the system, not to overturn it. That is the challenge we all must face.

Most people do expect, at the very least, competent management. Obama did appear competent but his staff picks? Like Ducky points out, look at Summers! How many Americans believe their work place is run competently? How many bitch at the end of the day that they could do a better job than their manager or boss?
William Greider writes in the Nation : "up is down and down is up,when humble folks parade as kings and queens and the reigning royals are dressed as clowns." Eduardo Galleano has been using that allegory for decades of course and the White House party crashers just confirm that those "in control" are the inmates, the incompetents, the con men and women.

kultur, I don't expect a General Strike to actually take shape but it's always interesting to re-invigorate the concept among the post-68 crowd. Just like the recent student occupations have done at the California universities.I still don't have a firm grip on Tea Baggers, they seem to be fizzling as their petty demands are met. ( no health reform, gay marriage, abortions, etc )

Ren, the whole debate on "leaders" is very tension filled. I read this piece in the ISR about the "responsibility of socialists" and it is very confused i think. The World Social Forum fears being a vanguard so much that it turned into a think-tank.

Now, as bonus season draws near, Bloomberg News reports that nervous Goldman Sachs partners are arming themselves. According to Bloomberg, some senior Goldman bankers are applying for gun permits ahead of the holidays for fear of the public's reaction once they start receiving their year-end rewards.

Hmmm, wonder if they know something.
