Working Class Heroes
Montana's unemployment rate hovers around 3% and yet actual wages and buying power are falling as the cost of living rises. Add to this a rise in worker productivity and we have a real contradiction in classic economic terms. We would expect low unemployment to create wage pressure but what is different now is both the types of jobs being created and the mentality of the new workforce, both products of what is generally called "globalization" but what I think can more accurately be called the colonization of everyday life.
We used to extract resources here (still do but scaled way back, most is outsourced to countries with lax environmental laws) and it was hard ,physical work that required concentrated labor. Logging , mining, dam building, road construction all needed industrial forces that were mobile and not particularly educated(in the formal sense). These workers were easily organized because they had a native grasp of class relations, exploitation and power relations. They fought for their share of the profit, they understood that without their productive capacity those natural resources could not be extracted.
Now days, a whole new division of labor has been constructed, workers are fragmented, atomized into small concerns and less rigidly defined categories. Service workers, small business employees, co-ordinators and contractors have taken the place of industry per se and this new labor force has been indocctrinated in the public school system to believe notions of "class" have been replaced by much more opaque categories of exclusion and division. The notion of solidarity, common cause or union has been systematically displaced and demonized through culturalization with active participation of media, entertainment and organized religion. National and racial exceptionalism lend meaning to lives of working, consuming, and paying for wars or yachts for the wealthy.
So people work harder for a smaller and smaller share and blame their predicament on straw men, vaguely concieved enemies and cultural outsiders. They are cynical of a hollowed out politics but frozen by apathy ,denial and powerlessness to effect any change. Montanans continue to buy the newest, biggest pickup which they cannot afford to fill with gas, complain about taxes while making minimum wage and sport flag decals and Support the Troops stickers.
The Montana IWW hopes to restore some pride and move people to regain some control over their own lives. If not now, when?

I think I know how to solve this problem.
Exactly the same with North Dakota. You sum it up perfectly. Interesting that in our culture of greed, workers organizing to make more money still is a tough sell to many workers.
Troutsky
How about starting a fundraiser? We can raise x amount of dollars provided you and your spouse renounce your citizenship and emigrate to Cuba.
Since you advocate collectivism for others you should experience it for around two decades yourself.
The IWW is limited by not having an electoral arm on principle. It's a bad time to have such a position, when unions as United Electrical Workers are moving towards a labor party.
Troutsky will lead tourists in Cuba, on fishing expeditions.
Beak, again we find an area for agreement! I am planning a "boatlift" from Miami to Cuba and we could use all the funding we can get, muchas gracias for your generous offer.
Ren, this electoral aspect is something we need to work out.It has been a sore spot since the split with Eugene Debs so long ago. Some think of electoral politics only in terms of "winning an office" and fail to see the grassroots organizing possibilities, the opportunity to affect the discourse, etc.on a local level.

I don't think people ever believed strongly in belonging to their own class. Only the intellectuals do that. Any attempt to get the people to hop on board the... whatever bandwagon will have to involve their relation and affinity for the home country, the good old U. S. of A.
Trout,

Could you please expound on what these opportunities are?
What has a the Labour Party done for grassroots causes in England? Where are these opportunities being ceased upon and making a difference?
For my part, the abdication of political action to a political party is exactly why nothing ever changes. The IWW is an opportunity to put the control of our political--as well as economic--lives in our own hands, not political elites. Yes, it will require the inactive to get active, but I see the lack of meaningful change through the current system as a reason so many are inactive. I'm not convinced that political parties are ever going to empower us!
Che Bob,
I'm not convinced that political parties are ever going to empower us!
Hilarious statement, a bit like someone saying "I'm not convinced this anaconda is ever going to empower me!", while the giant snake in question is squeezing his neck...
Political organizations, be they parties or unions, are part of the problem, not part of the solution...
Wiser, I think you need to study the history of the labor movement. The owner-class in America has been more successful in erasing this memory than it's counterpart in europe or latin america, which was my point, for which you provide sturdy proof.
Che Bob, I think of electoral politics as one more place to interject ideas and organize, another front (yes, a little distasteful)in the struggle. The empowerment occurs through engaging in debate, forcing the "center" to the left thereby restoring the right wing to it's deserved fringe status. You could run a campaign to mock the process and expose the corruption or run as a fascist, zenophobic corporatist, Im just saying it is a public forum sanctioned by society with opportunities for engagement.Obviously the Labour Party has been co-opted but I think Venezuela,Bolivia,Ecuador and others point to a role for anti-capitalist electoral politics.Real power is gained through direct action but can be re-inforced and consolidated through elections. British socialists may challenge New Labour and revive the true movement?
sonia, are you arguing against politics in general or just for unorganized politics?
"Could you please expound on what these opportunities are?

"expound on"? "ceased upon "?
And you teach? No wonder you're a radical.
Troutsky,
sonia, are you arguing against politics in general or just for unorganized politics?
Neither. I am just arguing for being VERY vigilent. Towards everyone (even GWB), but especially towards leftist totalitarians...
Don't trust anybody waving a flag, especially a red one...
Notice to All: Our grammer and punctuation is being monitored on this blog. This may seem like anal nitpicking but it is important to anon.Let's all work on it,shall we?
Thanks, Troutsky
I only endorse my comrades. I support other's political activity.
There are interesting development, in New Orleans in the city council elections, independent of Democrats and Republicans.
However corrupt the Labor Party in the UK is, it's a fertile recruiting ground for a mass movement.
"Notice to All: Our grammer and punctuation..."
That would be "grammar."
"However corrupt the Labor Party in the UK is, it's a fertile recruiting ground for a mass movement."
Not anymore it isn't. Nulabor is barely recognisable as Labor, membership has plunged and voter apathy has skyrocketed.
They win because the "opposition" Tory party is painted as even worse in the press. Aside from a few minor issues regarding the speed of dismantling the state i.e. what their constituents can be hoodwinked into allowing, there is no substantive difference to the parties aims.
Much the same goes for the Labour Party in Australia. It was killed off as a workers party in the 80s. The Labor {Party in New Zealand of 1984 turned out to be Chicago School neocon ideologues (after the election).
Nope. The left will have to be built from the ground up. The old leftist parties are beyond repair in my opinion.
