Sun City Retiree
This "Roundtable discussion took place on the Leher News Hour last night:
DEE WILLIAMS: And he was told last year when he got it that: If Obamacare health care passes, this would have to go to a committee, and, with all your other existing health problems, they will decide whether this pacemaker would be cost-effective. And I can almost guarantee you, you wouldn't get it.
GWEN IFILL: This is the death panels we have heard about, or what some people have called it?
DEE WILLIAMS: Yes, I mean, like the -- well, you can call it a death panel, whatever you want to, but a committee.
GWEN IFILL: A committee that would actually deny you coverage is your concern.
DEE WILLIAMS: More than likely.
They showed Dee and her decrepit husband at their beautiful Florida home, getting in their brand new Buick, driving to their doctor appointment to be paid for by Medicare and a supplement plan. The 80 year old matron told the interviewer she gets her information from "cable news and talk radio". She travelled to Washington with the Tea Party to tell the government to leave "people who were insured alone."
It was particularly stunning when this white poster child for class privilege said she was concerned for her "freedom". Something she learned from that cute Miss Palin no doubt.
People like this present an amazingly strong case for death panels. ( just kidding, I'm sure with ten years of intensive therapy she could become a compassionate, maybe even discerning person) It was painful to watch because at some level she understood how ridiculous she sounded, causing her to become increasingly defensive. You could see her thinking: "If only I could say it like Rush does!" She probably bought a Sleep Number Bed from Rush, fought against integration, fought to privatize Social Security, fought for energy de-regulation, supports secret rendition, and still believes Osama and Saddaam are the same person hiding the WMDs somewhere deep underground.
The bind is this bank reform Obama is now pushing for. Where does the Tea Party go, Evil Elite Bankers or Evil Government Regulations? Tough call for a modern patriot. Obama is beginning to display a little of that Chicago style political savvy we heard about.Republican elites like where the DOW is headed and will soon co-opt the Tea Party hillbillies.
I bought David Shields' Reality Hunger after seeing him present in rainy Portland a week ago. He is quite eloquent in a book store setting but didn't do so well in the Colbert Report format tonight. Very interesting work exploring new forms and hopefully it will get more exposure.

Just another mouth attesting to the avalanche of commodity fetishism; himself acting ou of false consciousneess; his work itself, a sampling... much like the moden DJ!
Sorry - I was refering to David Shields' new book... not the sun city octogenarian
Sister Sarah despoiled my home town yesterday. Quite an event.
I understand they started it off with someone singing "New York, New York". Yes, figure that out and during baseball season, no less.
Then Sister Sarah told Bostonians that they are all great patriots and we should remember the midnight "run" of Paul Revere. Guess she was prepping for Monday's marathon.
I took a pass but the anti Palin crowd is reported to be about a third of those attending.
Kultur: I think his critique is pretty radical. He advocates total appropriation, end of copyright and "intellectual property" and the social/market relations which they engender. He is all about tearing down boundaries, between fiction, non-fiction, memoir, essay. He even calls it a "manifesto".
I think he would appreciate what we are trying to do in our fiction despite the form.
Ducky: She thinks Bostonians are "real Americans"? C'mon. I watched Hannity do a straw poll on his show and Sarah was WAY behind Newt Gingrich for presidential possibility.
I must admit; I am not too familiar with him; just read some reviews!
The numbers are in and it seems that Sister Sarah drew a smaller crowd than last year's Hemp Fest (always a big attraction on the Common).
At my own blog, I regret posting about the Tea Party. They are just an arm of the Republican Party. Their program of calling for a balanced budget, abolishing Social Security and Medicare won't fly. In the end, its program that matters.
More interesting than the Tea Party and Pailin, is the opportunities for the left, with Obama in power. Heck he is moving the Supreme Court to the right. The left liberals didn't put in power to be Bush. In Afghanistan Karzai meets daily with the Taliban. He is now pro-Iran as well. The Taliban and US imperialism, are two sides of the same coin. Imperialism is the rule of finance capital, while the Taliban are its reactionary offspring.
Obama needs to be brought down by the left. That can only be done, with a labor party.
"The Taliban and US imperialism, are two sides of the same coin."
BINGO!!
The previous two comments were written by idiots.
KKKultur is upset because he lost his day job as rant writer for the Taliban. Obviously his Marxist Bong hit inspired rants were just too incoherent.
Obviously the Trotskyite clown is an expert at setting up fake groups for nefarious purposes. Few so called Peace Protesters are aware that the events are communist organized and many leave when they find out.
Let's turn our attention to Wall Street where the invisible hand seems to be running a rigged game.
The news today of a civil fraud case (only Beak is a big enough sucker to believe it goes to trial) against Goldman Sachs and a VP is just fabulous.
They market on of those derivative things to various marks and all the time they've got a play going with a hedge fund betting the things fail.
It's so beautiful you really have to cry. They can get away with just about anything and in broad daylight.
Somehow my Libertarian brethren are going to have to fess up. One of the cornerstones of their world is that both parties be equally well informed in a transaction. How often does that happen at the Wall Street tables. Always bet on the house.
We are so far down the freaking rabbit hole and we have the Rethugs (Hey, McConnell put in your teeth, you drive me nuts) pledging to fight even the watered down reform bill ...
... meanwhile outside Sarah Palin's window ...
She probably bought a Sleep Number Bed from Rush, fought against integration, fought to privatize Social Security, fought for energy de-regulation, supports secret rendition, and still believes Osama and Saddaam are the same person hiding the WMDs somewhere deep underground.
Uh, note the probably...Fact is, you don't know. I am not saying that this interview you report wouldn't give me indigestion, but you really have to stop assuming you know what people think and why they think it. That's why "people like her" think "people like you" are elitist radicals who know nothing about "real" people.
The Duck continues to wax about white collar criminals while advocating a genocidal philosophy.
Contrary do his delusions the American people know all about his power mad scams.
Of course when the American people reject Communism the fundamentalist followers of Marx call it a "false consciousness". The folks who watch the 700 Club are less dogmatic than the Duck, the Mazzola Marxist and Renegade Testicle.
Ducky, the guys who invent these schemes would argue " hey, it's capitalism. Never Trust Anyone or Anything! Golden Rule."
And if you read the fine print it always says "everything is a gamble.Odds vary. Good luck shmuck."
Lichanos: Get out a map, look for Hamilton Montana where I have lived and talked to people for thirty three years (more or less). I characterized her based on the interview and my experience but I used the word "probably" to provide room for error.I am investigating why people, including myself, construct certain belief systems and world views and if she or you think this an "elitst" project she would be wrong about that as well. But it's only speculation.
My point is that 'being wrong' is a continuum, a trajectory, and that makes her future policy positions predictable. It also makes her either blissfully unaware of her success rate or unconcerned. This is problematic.
By joining the group and doing the interview she voluntarily opens herself up to a certain degree of inference. I didn't speculate on her views concerning Obama's birth certificate or religion but the polls I have seen make it possible. IMO.
Always assume less, rather than more. That's all I'm saying.
It also makes her either blissfully unaware of her success rate or unconcerned.
In my experience, this is very common. What does it mean that well off middle-class people whine that they're not "rich?" Two things, I think:
1) People don't know or care about demographic statistics on income and income distribution.
2)Satisfaction has little to do with where one sits on the demographic curve. As long as you are striving, there's always someone ahead of you to make you feel you don't have enough.
How deep do these feelings go? I don't know. The amazing thing about our society is that it is stable enough that these feelings, deep or shallow, govern so much. Under novel stress, people sometimes sort out the trivial from the significant.
My point is that 'being wrong' is a continuum, a trajectory...
What the heck does this mean? You could excuse just about any statement under this rubric.
Sorry Lichanos, I don't say she has to feature it but she's got to show the fast ball. I don't think she has one.
When someone is submitted as a political leader and stumps by mouthing a few cliches and some outright lies then you call things by their name.
If she has something to say that should be considered seriously then she can always try saying it.
Ah The Strawman visited. He's always enlightening.
Hey Beak, how come the news in the English edition of Le Monde is so much more informative than the Daily News?
@Ducky-
Did I misunderstand something here? I thought the lady interviewed was an ordinary nobody...
Ah yes the Strawman is ideally a good
commie as he doesn't have a brain much like Renagade Testicle and the Mazzola Boy.
Maybe you should spend more time over in France. As Tabloids are almost all local stories the events of ordinary folks are beyond brain impaired cultists.
Commies talk of the people but it is only a means to a scam for power.
Sorry Lichanos, I thought the reference was to Sister Sarah Palin.
Now she is something that should be called by her name which involves demagoguery and other stuff.
The Duck talking about Palin's demagoguery on a blog that serves as
cheerleaders for a Narco Terrorist mentally disturbed drug addict who takes his wardrobe cues from Curtis Sliwa is amusing. Sorry, but the death cultists have a near monopoly
on that angle.
