Death Mask Awards

First place goes to Yon Giocechea ,who was awarded 500,000 dollars last Thursday as the winner of the , get this, Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty! Given out by the Cato Institute's Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity (not necessarily in that order) , it acknowledged young Yon's work in fomenting the opposition to Venezuela's Hugo Chavez during the referendum elections. Why channel through the NED or USAID when you have Libertarians defending Truth, Profit and Justice?

The next award goes to Hillary Clinton for her election eve "tough talk" on Iran. Her willingness to "obliterate" an entire people , pander to the Israeli Lobby and Right Wing and do anything it takes to get the stupid old white person vote shows she is well qualified to run this corporatocracy.

Last but certainly not least, lets recognize the amazing achievements of Robert Zoellick over at the World Bank and his efforts on behalf of the "global poor". This neo-con warrior, (one of the first to sign on with the Project for a New American Century) and former Chief US Trade Representative, will now preside over the starvation of millions of dark skinned persons and massive social upheaval, unrest and violence. Ethanol, Brazillian soy, Montana wheat, free markets and a huge boom in casket futures! Nicely done! Theres plenty of rice on MY grocery stores shelves.

Speaking of Montana wheat, an honorable mention must go out to eastern Montana rancher Oscar Murray who, in order to protect his interests in Bolivia (a huge estancia) has organized his own death squads to hold off the indigenous rabble. Montanan's don't take shit from indians and they vote primarily on the "gun" issue. A well regulated militia, with modern automatic weapons, the right of the rich to bear arms... In Montana it is called "Shoot, Shovel and Shut up" !

I'm a Crow Indian from Montana. From your article you are not a Montanan. "Shoot, shovel, and shut-up" refers to what Montana ranchers do to grizzly that kill their sheep. Automatic weapons are illegal in Montana and in America unless a special BATF $500.00 permit is issued (maybe, 3 or 4 in Montana). As a Crow Indian I have often had to run honkies off my land via the use of a firearm. They are the last defense poor Indians have against tyranny (especially the U.S. Cavalry).
The closest thing to the socialist paradice you envision are Montana's numerous BIA controlled Indian reservations. If the CATO
Institutes ideas had been allowed, my rez would not have 70% unemployment, and an average family income of $10,800. We would also have achieved Crow self-determination.

Anon,

How exactly would the ideas of the CATO Institute achieve any of your capitalist utopia of self-determination? Please explain. Rhetoric is the easy part.

U.S. Libertarians hijacked the word. It was a left-communist that coined it.

It was capitalism, even in the nuts at the CATO institute can't figure it out, that sent the Cavalry into Native lands. No doubt the BIA is a joke and ought to be dissolved. I say, follow the original treaties and give back complete sovereignty with reparations.

On the grassroots level, I've been hearing Bolivia, might be hotter than Venezuela. Chavez is to left of Morales, but on the street level, the masses are more militant in Bolivia. They have more history of pressing for demands. The opposition in Bolivia is more violent than in Venezuela.

Silly to talk of any self determination under capitalism. The first criteria for self determination, is that the working class is united.

Actually I am anon, but Montanans come with varied opinions, politics etc.Perhaps you didn't pick up on the ironic nature of this post, but I was comparing this ranchers attitudes towards the indigenous peoples of Bolivia to that of grizzlies ,wolves, in other words, "varmints". As for weapons, automatics may be "illegal" but I know of many who have them, some crazy racists, religious fanatics, survivalist types, all dangerous.

It is true that use of weapons can be a last resort against tyranny( though a "peoples militia" would be annhilated by State forces) and perhaps the second amendment should be interpreted as reflecting this reality. I also understand how your peoples history might cause you to be so protective of your land but it is no long term solution to root causes of oppression, something our "socialist paradise' tries to address, however imperfectly.Shared prosperity through "free markets" is the real utopian fantasy which never has and never could exist. Another foundation of libertarian thought, the sacredness of private property when put to "productive use" is exactly what caused the genocide of your people and continuing condition, in my opinion.

I misidentified the rancher. It is Ronald Larson of Plentywood Mt, he owns 41,000 acres and I was being a bit hyperbolic with "death squads" but he did organize violent resistance. Check Missoulian.org April 19 story by Dan Keane of AP.

Maybe anonymous can help me out here. I live out by the paper plant and I hear full auto fire all the time, especially on weekends. It still really freaks me out, but the first time I heard it I was out walking the dog and the shooting was coming from the tree line about a thousand yards in front of me. I had the worst PTSD moment in years. The worst part was that the fire was AK and M16 in an answering pattern that sounded just like a fire fight. The next worst part was there was nowhere to hide. I just froze out in the open. Good thing my neighbors came along and told me about the shooting range over there. The AK folks are really expending ammunition. Thirty shot blasts. The M16's just three to six shots. Very realistic.
